1st Outreach to Superstorm ‘Pablo’ Victims

Last January 2-3, we visited worst-hit and wiped-out Barangay Andap in New Bataan, Compostela Valley province. The National Institute of Geological Sciences (NIGS) at the University of the Philippines (UP) reports:

IMG_5025“What was once the center of Barangay Andap in New Bataan, Compostela Valley province is now a new riverbed with an estimated width of nearly a kilometer stretching up to eight kilometers down to the town proper. Typhoon Pablo brought flashflood in this town on Tuesday, leaving over a hundred persons killed and hundreds still missing.”

3We served 45 families, all members of 3 evangelical churches in the area. With no more homes and their properties “buried in a pile of rocks the size of boulders” (NIGS), they all now live in an evacuation center. They literally lost everything, including their Bibles. We encouraged them with God’s word, prayer and the distribution of new Bibles, rice, food and hygiene kits.

Long-term, we plan to visit them every month, conduct counseling sessions and encouragement seminars, and give them much-needed relief goods. During our visits, we will also train 15 pastors in Compostela Valley and 15 pastors in Davao del Norte. This is most urgent and necessary because we have to equip ministers to conduct Biblical psycho-social support sessions, counseling, teaching and preaching for thousands who are affected and continue to suffer in their communities.

Just last week, Compostela Valley and Davao del Norte were once again inundated by floods, triggered by days of non-stop heavy rains brought by the tail-end of a cold front. Four persons died while two others were reported missing. It also forced the evacuation of approximately 10,300 families or 39,900 people. This makes our planned monthly mission all the more necessary.

4Prayer Requests

Please pray for our 2nd visit to Compostela Valley and Davao del Norte on the last week of February.

  1. For financial provision
  2. For safe travel
  3. For the 30 pastors whom we will begin to train
  4. For the 45 evangelical Christian families that we are serving in Compostela Valley
