“And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him” (Matthew 3:16)

The descent of the Holy Spirit upon Jesus fulfilled Old Testament prophecies and empowered Him for His messianic mission. It marked the beginning of the new messianic era — the Spirit-dominated age of salvation and freedom from the curse and condemnation  of the old sin-dominated age.

“Many believed that the Spirit was no longer available in their time; others believed that the Spirit simply did not work as forcefully as in the days of the prophets, until the time of the end. That the Spirit comes on Jesus indicates the inauguration of the messianic era and marks Jesus out as the Spirit-bearer and hence Messiah.” – Craig S. Keener

“There have been many suggestions for the imagery of the dove here, but the best is probably to see a combination of Gen 1:2 (the Spirit of God hovering over creation), thus signifying a new creation; the Spirit as a symbol of Israel (Hos 7:11), with Jesus as the ideal, true Israelite; the dove returning to Noah’s ark (Gen 8:8-12) with the imagery of the new world being inaugurated; and the dove as a messenger signifying to Jesus the divinely commissioned role set for him. Putting them together, the descent of the Spirit signifies a new age being inaugurated in the coming of the Messiah, God’s very son.” – Grant R. Osborne

Have you put your trust in God’s anointed Messiah? He is the only King, Teacher and Savior whom the Father sent and commissioned for all of us. With His coming, the new age of redemption and restoration has begun. Because of His life, death and resurrection, all who believe in Him receive complete salvation and freedom from the guilt and slavery of sin.

Stop doubting and rejecting Jesus Christ. Believe. Because He is your only hope and salvation.
