Comfort and Strength

By Pastor Glem Melo

The Message of Genesis 15:1-20
Preached at the Reformed Presbyterian Church of Bowie (PCA), Maryland, U.S.A.

In Genesis 15, the Lord comforted and strengthened Abraham with His covenant word and covenant ceremony. And we see that the covenant ceremony (verses 7-17) is sandwiched by God’s reaffirmations of His promise of offspring (verses 1-6 and 18-20). This tells us that the substance of the covenant is the offspring that God promised to give to Abraham. The Lord Jesus Christ is the promised offspring (John 8:56; Galatians 3:6-8; Galatians 3:16). He is the the fulfillment, substance, and blessing of the covenant. In Him, we have eternal and undying comfort and strength amidst all trials and tribulations.Transfiguration2

“Your father Abraham rejoiced y that he would see my day.  He saw it and was glad.” – – The Lord Jesus Christ, John 8:56

“And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, ‘In you shall all the nations be blessed.’ … Now the promises were made to Abraham and to his offspring. It does not say, ‘And to offsprings,’ referring to many, but referring to one, ‘And to your offspring,’ who is Christ.” – Paul, Galatians 3:8 and 16
